2022 NBA Draft: Which Player Could Celtics Target If Trading in Round 1? originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston
The Boston Celtics have no first-round pick in the 2022 NBA draft. It was sent along with other assets to the San Antonio Spurs in February as part of Derrick White’s trade.
The Celtics currently have just one pick — No. 53 overall in the second round.
What are the chances of the C coming back in the first round? Well, they’re reportedly among the teams interested in the first-round winner 28th overall Golden State Warriors.
What kind of player could the Celtics be targeting as they advance in Round 1?
The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor sees LSU’s Tari Eason as a match.
Eason, listed at 6’8 and 210 pounds, is a versatile winger who can defend multiple positions and provide some attacks from the bench. He averaged 16.9 points per game for LSU last season. Eason also shot 35.9 percent from the 3-point range at LSU.
It’s possible that towards the end of the first round, Eason will be off the board. ESPN’s latest mock draft sees Eason going to the Houston Rockets in Round 1 in 17th place. Other mocks expect him to be picked somewhere between #26 and #30.
It’s hard to imagine the Celtics returning to the first round when they already have several young players who need more playing time, including Payton Pritchard, Grant Williams and Aaron Nesmith. But if the right player starts falling in Round 1, the Celtics might consider a promotion.
