virtuoso, a prestigious global network specializing in luxury and adventure travel has identified when, where and why rich people venture in 2022.

To find the most compelling trends, Virtuoso gathered insights from its high net assets / high net assets travel partners, partners and clients, conducted ongoing surveys and used its data warehouse with transactions worth more than $ 49.5 billion. Key revelations for this year include late celebrations as a driving incentive for travel, people are increasingly watching international destinations – and while the pandemic continues to affect mobility, optimism and the desire to travel remain strong.

What discouraged them from traveling just a few weeks ago is now a motivating factor. People who have become infected and recovered from the virus see their “antibody window” as the perfect time to get away. Virtuoso counselors report that their clients have contacted them to plan another vacation while they are still in quarantine. This is in line with the Virtuoso survey of January 2022, where 85 percent of travelers said they were “ready to travel.” The intention to travel is strong, with 86 percent of travelers surveyed saying they plan to travel abroad this year, and Virtuoso expects the number of bookings to continue to rise at the end of the first quarter and in the second quarter as the omicron wave recedes.

As Misty Belles, vice president of Global Public Relations for Virtuoso, told me in a telephone interview: is currently huge. The only fear of the virus is the fear of getting stuck – if passengers already had an Omicron, they see now as the optimal time to travel. It allayes many fears of getting stuck in the finish line. “

Where next? Tip: Globetrotters grow and pass

Virtuoso experts say that 2022 will be a year of trips that you will experience once in a lifetime. Virtuoso, based on its exclusive tour advisors, found that 76 percent saw a recent increase in ultraluxury travel with African safaris, Caribbean islands, international cities and ocean cruises as the most popular experiences.

The increase in higher category travel is the result of pent-up demand and expanded funding. The ability to spend more is an advantage because travel inflation means that costs are rising. Virtuoso bookings show that future hotel prices have risen 54 percent internationally and up 80 percent in the United States, while ticket prices have risen 19 percent this spring compared to 2019.

Where are some of these Wanderlust trips? Ms Belles adds: “Africa is in high demand – people have postponed visiting the safari in recent years. There are four “A” destinations: Africa, Alaska, Antarctica – this is the final border – and Australia for the same reason. It has been closed to visitors for the last two years and is reopening. These destinations are the ones to watch. “

Travel Advisors Vs. Do-It-Yourself: No competition

In the midst of a global pandemic, it is difficult to achieve peace, but travel advisers continue to prove their worth to their clients and to the entire tourism industry. Even in “normal” times, trip planning is not always easy. As international travel rules change, it has never been more important to turn to a consultant to plan, book and, most importantly, provide a contingency plan in the event of a travel disruption. Counselors continue to prove their worth and increase the demand for professional planning, as Virtuoso reports that demands from people seeking counselors have increased by 50 percent last year compared to 2020.

“There are too many unknowns for you to be completely comfortable planning your own trip – it’s a much more complicated travel environment than two years ago. No questions asked. When you use a counselor, you use a person who does it day in and day out — they have relationships on the ground to get real-time information. ”

Celebration Travel: Catch the gang

Replacing a lost year (or two) of missed milestones has become a priority for those trying to reunite with loved ones. Seventy-seven percent of Virtuoso consultants have seen an increase in travel to celebrations, with anniversaries and major birthdays being the main motivators. Multi-generational travel continues to encourage family reunions, with Mexico and the Caribbean remaining at the forefront of preferred destinations. When asked, 95 percent of counselors also believe that travel to celebrations will continue to be a major trend until 2022.

“Traveling to a party is a huge motivation for people,” adds Ms. Belles. “Milestone anniversaries and birthdays have been in the background. Multi-generational travel has returned really strong – families have been separated during the pandemic – but the ability to travel is now coming to the fore again. Grandparents really value that time with their grandchildren, and people want to have these experiences and memories together. ”

Conscious return

The pandemic is making people more aware of their impact on the world, and this has led to what Virtuoso calls “conscious return.” In a recent Virtuoso survey, 82 percent of travelers said they wanted to travel more responsibly in the future as a result of the pandemic, and 78 percent said it was important to choose travel agents that had a strong sustainability policy, forcing them to look for companies committed to Virtuoso called three pillars. Sustainability: Protecting the planet, supporting local economies and celebrating cultures. And 70 percent agreed that traveling sustainably enhances their vacation experience.

This is another result of the pandemic – a silver point – 82% of the travelers we contacted said that the pandemic was forcing them to travel more responsibly in the future. People are much more aware and tourism cycles do not follow the same seasonality as two years ago. “People are looking for travel agencies that have a sustainability policy. People are trying to support their local economies and local cultures. “

Opening of hotels in 2022

Virtuoso hotel reservations in 2021 increased by 87 percent compared to 2020, and the momentum continued when reservations in January 2022 increased by 119 percent compared to the same period last year. City hotels have been at the forefront, with reservations up 240 percent in January 2022 compared to January 2021. Virtuoso, which monitors the opening of the world’s hottest hotels, has identified these as the ones to be watched:
