Andy Strickland is a reporter I respect. He works in St. Louis for Blues TV but also hosts an entertaining podcast called “Cam and rope.He posted something about Valeri Nichushkin this morning:
The Colorado Avalanche and Valeri Nichushkin are heading into overtime. There is still some work to be done before the deal is finalized. ##GoAvsGo

For the record, I’m hearing similar things from a few sources. I think it’s going to be a very good deal for Big Val, a long-term deal. What will the cap hit be? I’m not exactly sure about that, but I’m guessing it will be in the $5 million range.
Nichushkin has truly emerged as one of the best two-way forwards in the NHL this year. We all saw what he did in the playoffs too and earned hard points for playing with a broken foot in Game 6 against Tampa Bay.
It’s hard to fathom just how far Valeri Nichushkin has come since he first accepted a bargain deal after being sacked by the Dallas Stars. He’s gone almost 100 NHL games without a goal and looks like the contortionist of all time.
Gradually it got better and better and better. Now he’s kind of a star in the league, playing for a Stanley Cup champion.
We’ll see if a new deal is struck today or this weekend. If not, he could still go to UFA on July 13. However, I don’t expect that. I think he’ll be a member of the Colorado Avalanche for a few more years.
