Report: The Spurs could trade up for Keegan Murray

The San Antonio Spurs are a little over a week away from their sixth lottery pick in franchise history, but there are reports that PATFO may want to use the 9th, 20th, 25th, and 38th picks to get closer to the top of the lottery Teams to Maneuver 2022 NBA Draft.

Jake Fisher from Bleacher report and Rafael Barlowe of Big board of the NBA are two reputable writers who say that Silver and Black are trying to consolidate the selection to avoid four rookies coming to training camp. And it appears general manager Brian Wright is focused on Keegan Murray, according to a Q&A with Matt Babcock Basketball News.

San Antonio has met with 48 prospects through training and interviews as we approach June 23rd. Keegan Murray has not had any confirmed contact with the team as of yet. However, this does not necessarily mean that the two parties do not know each other.

The Spurs sent staff to the Iowa-Nebraska game on Feb. 25, when Keegan Murray faced his potential first-round teammate Bryce McGowens and the Cornhuskers, according to Jimmy Watkins of the Omaha World-Herald. That could be a coincidence. On the other hand, San Antonio has several reasons to be interested in the six-eight forward.

Murray was one of the biggest breakout stories in college basketball last season, averaging 23.5 points and 8.7 boards while shooting 55.4% from the field and 39.8% from beyond the arc. The 21-year-old sophomore was amazingly efficient at post-ups, put-backs, and isolations. And he’s considered the nation’s deadliest scorer.

In addition to his offensive exploits, the former Hawkeye recorded 1.3 steals and 1.9 blocks per game, causing chaos in the fast lanes and hitting shots as a weak rim guard. Despite a lack of top speed or top-notch athletics, Murray was consistently reliable keeping watch one-for-one up front and showed he could switch to the boundary in an emergency.

While this brief scouting account of Keegan Murray makes him perfect for a San Antonio team in desperate need of frontcourt help alongside Jakob Poeltl, the Spurs may not have the means to move high enough to secure their goal .

Unfortunately for the good guys DraftKings have Murray as their fifth overall pick at -120, the best odds of any prospect who they think has a chance of getting off the board on this slot. So would it be worth giving away multiple bites of the barrel apple to a player with a lower cap than Jabari Smith Jr. or Paolo Banchero? Probably not, but that’s for reception to decide.
