Brad Pitt stars in Bullet Train.

David Leitch is one of the top directors of Hollywood action films with credits such as John Wick, Nobody, Hobbs and Shaw, Deadpool 2 and Atomic Blonde. The next film on his list is Bullet Train, based on the novel of the same name by Kōtarō Isaka (“Maria Beetle” in Japanese). During CinemaCon 2022, the director came to the Vegas convention and gave a sneak peak into the Colosseum’s auditorium, which was filled with theater owners, executives and the media.

The scene begins with the Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive” with a long shot of Tokyo. The shots then go close to the streets where Brad Pitt’s character is walking and enjoying life. It is short lived when he gets a call from Maria Beetle who wants him to do a job. She then gives him the codename Ladybug despite his hesitation.

Ladybug informs Maria that the Japanese are considerate, but Andrew Koji’s character bumps into him and Ladybug quickly corrects himself by mentioning that the guy wasn’t considerate. Koji’s character is looking for something.

Ladybug gears up for the mission and heads to a locker which contains an assortment of weapons including firecrackers and rifles. He takes some of the items and almost brings the gun, but decides against it.

Masi Oka acts as a gatekeeper and allows Koji’s character on the bullet train. Later, Ladybug is seen hurrying onto the train.

The scene then switches to two characters named Lemon and Tangerine, played by Brian Tyree Henry and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, respectively. They sit on the bullet train and make jokes about their names, including changing them to apple and orange.

Koji sees a little girl played by Joey King (The Conjuring) but he gets tasered by her and passes out.

Ladybug is looking for a suitcase and is surprised that he found it so quickly in one of the bullet train compartments.

Lemon and Tangerine move to places near their target, which is the son of a powerful man. Lemon pulls out a sheet of Thomas the Engine stickers and describes Thomas’ many friends and their personalities, including Percy the green tank engine. He compares her to the son.

Lemon and Tangerine then argue about how many enemies they killed in one of their missions and it breaks the fourth wall. It’s a violent and comedic segment reminiscent of Legolas and Gimli counting how many orcs they’ve killed in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Turns out there was an extra kill, but it was unintentional as a good samaritan was killed in an explosion while trying to help someone who was stuck in a car.

As it turns out, both Lemon and Tangerine were in charge of taking care of the briefcase, but it was taken by Ladybug. Their target’s father speaks to them on the phone and asks, “Do you have my dead son and the briefcase?”

Brad Pitt and Bad Bunny star in Bullet Train.

Ladybug is about to exit the bullet train with her briefcase, but is prevented from doing so by a Spanish-speaking character, played by Bad Bunny. (He will play El Muerte, a Marvel character who will be getting his own movie.) The mysterious assassin stabs Ladybug, but he is saved by his phone. The fight ensues, but it’s clear Ladybug doesn’t want to fight, saying, “Dude, I don’t even know you.” He’s thrown around for refusing to fight. The preview ends here and it really sets the tone of the film with its comedy and action.

Bullet Train seems like a fun ride with crazy battle scenes and a train full of assassins. It is slated to hit theaters on July 29, 2022.
