nobody movie_The Super Mario Bros. movie has been pushed back to April 2023

Shigeru Miyamoto has hijacked Nintendo’s social media accounts to announce that the Super Mario Bros. movie has been pushed back to Spring 2023 – April 7th in North America and April 28th in Japan, to be precise. Guess we’ll have to wait a little longer to enjoy Jack Black’s rendition of Bowser…

Originally slated for a late 2022 release, we’ve seen or heard basically nothing about the film since Nintendo revealed the all-star cast of actors who would step into the Mario series’ many iconic roles. It’s already been five years since Illumination and Nintendo signed on the dotted linebut not even a teaser trailer has been released, and no one knows what (if anything) Chris Pratt will do with his voice.

The announcement of Chris Pratt as Mario caused sighs across the industry considering how widespread it was. He’s obviously in Guardians of the Galaxy and the highlights of the Avengers movies, he’s also in the Jurassic World franchise and (perhaps most relevant to an animated production) The LEGO Movie – he’ll also play Garfield in another animated role. Will Mario push him to hone his acting skills, or will he just apply his usual schtick to the role?

Joining him is Anya Taylor-Joy from Queen’s Gambit playing Princess Peach, while Always Sunny in Philadelphia will be actor Charlie Day’s Luigi, Jack will be Black Bowser, Keegan-Michael will play Key Toad and Seth Rogen will smack his chest becomes Donkey Kong.

The delay will at least give Illumination time to prepare their challenger for the greatest video game adaptation. Nintendo hopes the film follows in the footsteps of the hit Movie detective pikachu It wowed fans of the Pokémon franchise when it released in 2019. It was a massive box office hit and showed Nintendo (via The Pokémon Company) what modern animation and customization can achieve. However, Mario must now try to beat his rival Sonic’s records from the early ’90s.

After a successful debut in early 2020 film, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 released earlier this month and broke box office records for the biggest opening weekend for a video game movie.
