Audiences were captivated as veteran actress Mumtaz shook his leg with actor Shammi Kapoor in Aajkal Tere Mere Pyaar Ke Charche. Mumtaz, who was 16 at the time, was becoming a phenomenon and was on her way to stardom, but behind the scenes she was dealing with an enormous heartbreak. Mumtaz had a brief affair with Shammi Kapoor during those years, but it ended when she refused to marry him.

Mumtaz recently told Pinkvilla that she “loved him tremendously” and that he loved her too. The ‘Aap Ki Kasam’ star has expressed her regret at not being able to marry him. “I was only 17, he was 18 years older than me. It was way too early for me to get married. Kucch banna tha, mujhe,” she explained.

Mumtaz said their split was amicable as they parted “with understanding” because he had been extremely kind and compassionate to her. Reflecting on those days, the ‘Roti’ actor claimed if she had married Shammi Kapoor back then “it wouldn’t have worked” as she “had a regret in her heart”.

“I wanted to be an actress. I wanted to achieve something. The Kapoors were pretty strict about their bahus not working in films,” she explained. Mumtaz described Shammi Kapoor’s second wife Neela Devi as a great woman, a gorgeous person. “She was great to him and treated him so nicely,” she added.

Mumtaz previously explained in an interview with ETimes that no one thought she turned down marrying him. “Shammi Kapoor was really sweet and compassionate to me. Nobody could hardly believe that we were in love. No one thought I would have refused him a marriage since Shammi was better off financially; they asked: How can Mumtaz deny Shammi?” she continued.

Mumtaz had a long and successful career in the film industry.
