Nobody needs another American live-action remake of a Japanese anime series, but how about a live-action American remake of a Japanese anime series that was already chopped up for American audiences decades ago? And what if this Japanese anime series actually consisted of several different anime shows that weren’t technically related, but were still combined into one thing? yes we are talking about robotechone of the first anime shows to have a major impact on the US, and one that Hollywood seems to revisit every few years when it feels the urge to dump a bunch of cash on a hot name-recognition property.

It’s been five years since we last heard from anyone trying to make one robotech Movie, which means an update is due… and check this out, we’ve got one: meeting says hawk eye Director Rhys Thomas was tapped to direct robotech film for Sony (“Harmony Gold is also involved,” says Deadline, which is a fun detail for those of us who’ve followed the comings and goings of robotechthere Of course Harmony Gold is involved).

This seems like a legit move for this movie to actually happen given its script and director, but we’ve been fooled before. That was the update five years ago wonder woman Co-writer Jason Fuchs was working on a screenplay (the current script doesn’t appear to be his), and a few months earlier we had heard about it Andy Muschietti would direct the film (He obviously doesn’t anymore). James Wan was hooked up years before and Warner Bros. tried to make it possible years ago thatand Tobey Maguire’s production company has secured the rights years ago that after the success of the first transformers Movie.

So this was a saga that you would normally have to combine three independent anime shows to get, and now –maaaaybe– it will actually end with the film being shot. But we’re not too optimistic… it’s been almost 15 years since Tobey Maguire started pulling this off.

For those who don’t know robotechit begins on an earth in the near future (in the distant year 2009) after an alien spacecraft crash-landed years earlier and inadvertently gifted humanity with a lot of exciting sci-fi technology – including the ability to build extremely cool transforming fighter jets called Valkyries. The aliens eventually come back looking for their spaceship and some bad things happen. It’s like top gun meets transformers meets star trekand a pop singer named Minmei plays surprisingly big role in the events. It’s all pretty cool.
