Corresponding diversity — who first broke the news — Bad Bunny will play El Muerto for Sony Studio’s film catalog, which includes other films such as Spider-Man: No Way Home, poisonand the newest disease.

Bad Bunny was introduced by Sanford Panitch, President of Sony Motion Pictures Group, at CinemaCon in Vegas yesterday. “This opportunity to bring El Muerto to life is incredible. It’s amazing,” Bad Bunny said during the panel. Per IndieWire. “I love wrestling, I grew up wrestling and now I’m a wrestler… I think this is the perfect role for me. It’s going to be epic, I’m sure.”

For those who don’t know The dead is a wrestler who derives his superhuman strength and endurance from a mask passed down through generations in his family.

He appeared for the first time in the comics in Friendly neighborhood Spider-Man No. 6 and actually wrestles with Spider-Man and tries to unmask him.

El Muerto is originally from Magdalena de Kino, Sonora, Mexico, but given that Bad Bunny is from Puerto Rico, this may or may not change the character’s origin in the film adaptation.

This wouldn’t be his first acting role either, as he appeared on Netflix as Arturo ‘Kitty’ Paez Narcos: Mexico in 2021 and will be starring in the upcoming star-studded film fast train alongside Brad Pitt and Sandra Bullock.

Response to the news has been mixed so far, with some fans saying they will give the film a shot:

An obscure character, but there’s long been an interesting intersection between superheroes and luchadores, and this might be a cool approach, especially given that El Muerto is a family coat. Like I said before, get passionate people behind it and no character is off limits.

Hey, I just wanted to say that we should be more open to the El Muerto movie. I like Bad Bunny as an artist, I respect his grind. Once the ball gets in motion to choose a writer, director, cast, suit, etc., I think people will have a change of heart.

While others question why it will exist at all when bigger characters like Miles Morales still don’t have a live-action adaptation:

I like Bad Bunny, but C’MON 💀 Sony makes movies about characters we don’t like, not some mf that appeared in two issues of a non-canon comic 😭

That’s no disrespect to Bad Bunny – who must be as good on Bullet Train as ATJ, who got Kraven out of the same movie. This is a fairly completely unknown Spider-Man character who is once again getting his own movie.

I’m not a fan of the “nobody asked for it” argument because nobody asked for a lot of movies that ended up doing pretty well, but literally nobody asked for an El Muerto movie. He was in two comics. Two. Two problems.

I really don’t know who makes these creative decisions at Sony. As with all the amazing alternate versions of Spider-Man, we could get animated or live-action spinoffs, because how do we get an ‘El Muerto’ movie?

The film is scheduled for release on January 12, 2024.

What do you think? Are you ready to see El Muerto in action, or would you have preferred that Sony had gone in a different direction with their Spider-Verse?
