NBA rumors: Rockets trading Christian Wood to Mavericks for first-round pick

Christian Wood is on his way, but he won’t be leaving Texas.

The Houston Rockets big man is reportedly being traded to the Dallas Mavericks. In exchange, the Rockets get the #26 overall standings 2022 NBA draftreported ESPN’s Boban Marjanovic, Trey Burke, Marquese Chriss and Sterling Brown, Adrian Wojnarowski, citing sources.

The Mavs will be Wood’s seventh NBA team. Wood was not drafted in 2015 but started his professional career with the Philadelphia 76ers in this season. Since then he has played for the Charlotte Hornets, Milwaukee Bucks, New Orleans Pelicans, Detroit Pistons and Rockets.

Wood was a double-digit scorer in his limited stint with the Pelicans and Pistons, but he really began to shine when he came to Houston. In his first season with the Rockets, he averaged a career-high 21.0 points per game and averaged a double-double in 2021-22.

Now Wood will join a team that just made it to the Western Conference Finals. The Mavericks earned the No. 4 seeding West, beating the No. 5 Utah Jazz and top-seeded Phoenix Suns to start the playoffs. They eventually fell on the Warriors of the Golden State in a five-game Western Conference Finals series, but they seem eager to take another leap with the acquisition of Wood.

Houston, on the other hand, gets another first-round pick, along with a handful of benchers it acquired as part of the deal. The team finished the tournament with a worst 20-62 record in the league and was drafted 3rd in the 2022 draft lottery. In addition, Houston has the Brooklyn Nets First round pick this year (#17) in James Harden’s blockbuster trade from January 2021.
