NBA insider believes Knicks’ Mitchell Robinson will enter free agency

The New York Knicks will add a few new faces to their roster over the next two months, but they’ll also lose at least a few players in the process, including perhaps their starting center. If the Knicks and Mitchell Robinson don’t agree to a contract extension, he will become an unrestricted free agent.

Speculation aside, there’s no news on the Robinson front. And time is ticking. At the age of 24 several teams will be interested in him freehand. It will be bittersweet to see him leave New York, but it looks like he will.

Robinson was drafted by the Knicks in the second round of the 2018 draft, and in 2021 New York drafted center Jericho Sims in the second round. If Robinson leaves, the Knicks will stay with Sims and Nerlens Noel. However, don’t expect the organization to be happy with this duo.

Will Mitchell Robinson leave the Knicks as a full free agent?

On the subject of Robinson’s future in New York, SNY’s Ian Begley shared some interesting information. Not only did he write about the center heading into the offseason as an unrestricted free agent (shocking), but he wrote about how the New York front office feels after the draft lottery. begley wrote:

In the days following the NBA lottery, several people in contact with the Knicks say they are considering off-season scenarios for the middle position should Robinson sign elsewhere.

But I wouldn’t read too much into it. Any competent NBA team plans all possible outcomes of its own player’s free agency.

It’s also worth noting that the Knicks have sent coaches to work with Robinson this offseason, according to a league source.

As he said, it is normal for the front office to do their best to cover all aspects as nothing has been made official on Robinson yet. If he leaves, the Knicks will need to be prepared to find a replacement in the offseason.

If Robinson wants to stay in New York, it will depend on how much money the front office is willing to offer him. It helps that the Knicks have his bird rights, but there’s also a possibility that Robinson could sign with another team for more money. What’ll it be?
