The Detroit Pistons were unlucky in this year’s NBA Draft Lottery, having shared the league’s worst record in the NBA last season. However, they received their fifth overall pick in the NBA draft, and while that was disappointing to Pistons fans, there will still be plenty of talent among Detroit’s picks. Aside from the top 3 picks, there’s not much consensus on who will fall in picks four through ten, but one player stands out for our experts. Our best bet for Detroit’s No. 5 pick is Shaedon Sharpe, with odds from DraftKings Sportsbook.

2022 NBA Draft: Detroit Piston’s first pick odds
DraftKings Sportsbook published odds for the pick of the 5th place Pistons and there are five different players to choose from with odds of +1000 and better. The five men who lead the charge, selected by Detroit, include:
- Keegan Murray (-175)
- Jaden Ivey (+350)
- Shaedon Sharpe (+550)
- Benedict Mathurin (+650)
- Dyson Daniels (+800)
A $10 bet on the Pistons to select Shaedon Sharpe with their first pick returns $55 in profit and you can place that bet at DraftKings Sportsbook. Let’s break down why our pundits are predicting the Pistons will leave with Sharpe over odds-favorite Keegan Murray.
2022 NBA Draft Detroit Pistons 1st pick prediction: Shaedon Sharpe (+550)
Odds at most major sportsbooks suggest the Detroit Pistons are likely to pick Keegan Murray with the fifth overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft, but we predict the Pistons will pick this year’s “Mystery Man” Shaedon Sharpe. We’ll cover why Detroit would be better off taking on Sharpe and why Murray is still the favorite at No. 5.
Shaedon Sharpe is a dark horse in this year’s NBA draft, having just turned 19 on May 30 and not participating in a college season after signing in Kentucky for the upcoming year. Sharpe qualified to be drafted, and aside from Gonzaga’s Chet Holmgren, Sharpe has the greatest potential in this draft class. In addition, he is probably the most athletic player in this year’s class and has demonstrated his ability to get to the edge and shoot from deep. Although some NBA scouts are asking if he can adapt to the pace of the NBA since his last competitive game was against high school competition, we reckon playing alongside Detroit’s Cade Cunningham will make the young scorer’s transition that much easier becomes.

While we predict Detroit’s Shaedon Sharpe will be selected, the odds suggest Detroit will likely select Iowa’s Keegan Murray. Murray would fit well into Detroit’s system and would be a good replacement for Jerami Grant if the Pistons decide to part ways with the wing. However, we’re not sure if that would be the best move for the franchise given that a backcourt of Cunningham and Sharpe could dominate the NBA five years from now.
We discussed the possibility of Detroit taking on Murray with this pick, but we didn’t envision Murray making such a dramatic leap into the top five picks. Murray had +30,000 chances of finishing No. 1 in May, while Sharpe’s odds were just +4,000. This clarifies why Detroit should choose Sharpe as he has the advantages and ability to become No. 1 overall. Murray will be a strong player in the NBA, but he doesn’t have the same potential as Sharpe. If Detroit looks to solidify their guard game for years to come, we predict they’ll pick Shaedon Sharpe with the 5th overall.
