Nazem Kadri takes big step toward return for Stanley Cup Final Game 2 vs. Lightning

The Colorado Avalanche won Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals Wednesday night against the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-3 in overtime. Thursday morning was even better. Injured star Nazem Kadri has been spotted practicing skating and stick work for the first time since his thumb injury at the Western Conference Finals.

A little over a minute into Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals against the Oilers, Evander sent Kane Kadri off the boards. He immediately went onto the ice in pain and was ruled out with an upper body injury. Then, on June 6, he was forced to have thumb surgery. Many believe that he will not be available for the series against the Lightning.

However, there is still a chance that the Avalanche forward can make a return. Kadri isn’t the only injury concern. Colorado will also be without Andrew Cogliano, who was also injured on the last lap.

Meanwhile, the Lightning got back one of their Game 1 stars, Brayden Point.

The Avalanche demonstrated their speed and depth in their Game 1 win. Third row winger Andre Burakovsky scored the decisive goal just over a minute into overtime.

While it looked like the better team for much of the game, the fact that it took overtime to defeat the Lightning on home ice is a little unsettling. That’s especially true when you consider how badly Andrei Vasilevskiy played and conceded two very soft goals. This will probably not happen again.

If Kadri can return this series, it probably won’t be until much later. Game 2 takes place in Colorado on Saturday night.
