Jabari Smith, Chet Holmgren, Paolo Banchero look to make history

The 2022 NBA Draft is here, and with it comes great excitement and anticipation for the beginning of a pro basketball career. This year’s design has another reason to be excited. History could be made at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Each of the top three picks, Auburn’s Jabari Smith, Gonzaga’s Chet Holmgren and Duke’s Paolo Banchero have a chance to make NBA draft history. Here’s how it goes, according to ESPN Stats and Info.

According to ESPN, Smith, Holmgren and Banchero may be the first batch of freshmen to go 1-2-3 in the NBA draft since 2017, when Markelle Fultz, Lonzo Ball and Jayson Tatum were the top three draft picks.

Freshmen have only played 1-2-3 six times in the combined NBA draft era. This year’s crop most likely will, as Smith, Holmgren and Banchero have been widely regarded as the top three players in the class since the draft lottery.

The only real question marks regarding the trio are the order in which they will be picked within the top three picks of Thursday’s draft. For most of the past few weeks, it was Smith and Holmgren flip-flopping at the front.

However, Banchero made an overnight surge as a potential No. 1 pick. While there might be some surprises in the top 3 picks, it seems likely that this trio of prospects will be the first names off the board.

NBA draft history is likely to be made.
