Islanders & NHL Playoff News: Avalanche waste MacKinnon hat trick; old UFAs of note

Two more games tonight as Round 2 continues with the Battle of Albert and the Hurricanes playing against… anyone. Last night’s series isn’t over yet either.

But first, a few islander-esque things…

  • I won’t lie – and it’s not just the old man in me speaking, I swear – even if my own kid becomes an eSports “star”, I will never go anywhere just to watch people play video games. [Isles]

NHL News

There was only one streak in play last night, allowing the league to make Avalanche blues a little less inhumanly late. If you wrote off the series, you didn’t miss out on a great game, but you missed out on great drama:

The Avalanche gambled away a 3-0 lead when the Blues equalized late. Then Nathan MacKinnon completed a hat trick and would go on to win the event with THIS eventual game (note the position of his blade on the actual shot… not easy):

After clearing the Hats off the ice, the Blues leveled in the last minute with the sixth attacker (after Gabriel Landeskog had one of those golden chances to put things into the empty net before Justin Faulk interrupted him). The Blues then forced a Game 6 with a “Why not?” Tyler Bozak shoots from long range.

Another way to illustrate that the OT winner wasn’t, um, not a high proof shot:

Section #97:

  • The Oilers have a chance to get through tonight. Connor McDavid is in another galaxy right now. [TSN]
  • Or here’s a lot of wasted words about whether he’s the “best” or the “greatest” or whatever. [TSN]
  • But here’s an argument for McDavid helping the Oilers even when he’s off the ice. [Sportsnet]

Elsewhere:

  • Jaromir Jagr, who owns the team, tends to {rubs his eyes, blinks} 35 Pro Hockey Season. [NHL]
  • Joe Thornton, who might consider buying a team, isn’t sure he’ll play in a 25th season. [NHL]
  • A deal to keep Martin St. Louis as coach of the Canadiens is expected shortly. [TSN]
  • Andrew Brunette would love to remain head coach of the Panthers, but GM Bill Zito says wait a minute, we’ll do a thorough review. [NHL]
  • 12 out of 12 NHL managers and coaches or whatever picked the Flames to get past the Oilers. What has changed now that they are 3-1 behind? [Athletic]
  • The Senators could dish out the 7th overall victory. Cool story bro. [NHL]
  • Brilliant and utterly upright, Tom Wilson has had knee surgery, which sadly will prevent NHL fans from seeing his skill and creativity as we begin next season. [NHL | Sportsnet]
