How the Rangers won another Game 7, plus why the Celtics are NBA’s most resilient team

Happy Tuesday everyone! I hope you had a long weekend full of friends, family and of course sports.

Let’s get straight to the point.

Good morning to everyone, but especially to…

THE NEW YORK RANGERS

PNC Arena was the strongest stronghold for the hurricanes. No visitor came to Raleigh and left with a win.

Until last night.

Behind an explosive offensive and the goalkeeper’s blind shot stop Igor Shesterkinthe ranger dominated game 7 and earned a 6-2 win and advancing to their first Eastern Conference Finals since 2015.

  • New York scored twice in the first period, both times on the power play. Adam Fox opened the scoring, and Chris Kreider followed shortly thereafter.
  • Ryan Strome made it 3-0 in the second period.
  • chalk, Philip Chytil and Andrew Copp (empty net) all scored in the third period for New York while Carolina scored Tony DeAngelo and Max Domi.
  • Shesterkin saved 36 of the 38 shots he facedincluding several at close range.
  • In the Carolina net, starter Anti Ranta left injured in the second half. fuse Pyotr Kochetkov registered and allowed three goals in 12 shots. defender Seth Jarvis was also injured.

This was one of the most impressive Game 7 road performances you’ll see. occurred last night Carolina was 7-0 at home this postseason with a +17 goal difference in those seven games. From the start, however, he had a different feeling. The visitors’ powerplay overwhelmed Carolina early on and it was 2-0 within eight minutes. Every time it seemed like the Hurricanes might get back in, Shesterkin would shut the door.

The Rangers meet the two-time defending champions lightning next. New York won all three meetings of the regular season, but as we’ve seen this year — and the two years prior — Tampa Bay is taking it to another level in the playoffs.

  • 3rd Mets (back: 5)

How Celtics bounced back from a slow start to reach the Finals; Heat at the crossroads? 🏀

USATSI

On January 6, 2022, RJ Barrett hit a 3-pointer on the buzzer and crowned the curtsy‘ 25-point comeback in a 108-105 win over the Celts. Boston fell to 18-21 on the season, 11th in the Eastern Conference. Fast forward almost five months, and The same Celtics are headed to the NBA Finals after beating Miami 100-96 in Game 7 on Sunday night.

Our NBA expert Jack Maloney investigated this how the Celtics turned things around and became the most resilient team in the NBA. There are a few stats that best illustrate this toughness:

  • Since that loss to New York, the Celtics have only lost games once in a row (late March).
  • In the playoffs, Boston is 6-0 after a loss and 3-0 in the elimination games.
  • From January 7th Boston led the league in defensive scoring (104.9). Miami finished second with 109.0.
  • To illustrate how much better Boston was defensively than everyone else, the difference in defensive ratings between Boston (first) and Miami (second) was greater than the difference between Miami (second) and Minnesota (18th) over that span.

On the other hand, for the heat Jimmy Butler‘s incredible play not only forced a Game 7, but almost won it for the overwhelmed heat. But now Miami found between two epochswrites our NBA guru Sam Quinn.

  • Quin: “Jimmy Butler, Kyle Lowry and PJ Tucker will likely be relegated next season. They have plenty of youth to make up for that lost value, but it won’t be cheap for much longer. Tyler Herro, Gabe Vincent and Max Strus all expire after next season. Bam Adebayo is on a maximum contract and Duncan Robinson is suspended for four more seasons despite falling out of the rotation and lest you think this issue is exclusive to the youngsters, Tucker has a player option and a strong run after that Season, could likely drop out and command at least several years on his current salary. Throw in Victor Oladipo, who is also headed for free agency, and only Butler, Lowry, Adebayo and Robinson are locked up next year.”

Our team of NBA reporters did an excellent job Preview of the final, starting on Thursday, and their work will be featured in this newsletter over the next few days. If you can’t wait until then, check it all out here.
