Houston Rockets lucky to capitalize on Celtics’ mistake

While almost everything went perfectly for the Celtics last year, the loss of Garrison Mathews to the Rockets is a move they’ll likely want back.

Does anyone else think the Boston Celtics wish they had Garrison Mathews on their roster now as they battle to take points off the bench? Maybe they should have rated him the same way the Rockets did.

The Celtics are hitting a wall of sorts during the NBA Finals as they struggle to get any offensive consistency from their bench players.

In the Game 5 loss, the Boston bench had 10 points to the Warriors’ 31. Although the Game 4 loss was better, the Celtics bench was still outperformed by the Warriors bench.

There’s a recurring theme here that only gets worse when one of the starters goes cold for the Celtics, who will obviously play the vast majority of the minutes. We saw this a lot at various points during the playoffs.

Wouldn’t it be nice for the Celtics to have a consistent shooter like Garrison Mathews coming off the bench to pick up those points when one of the other guys is slowing down?

This was one of the few mistakes the Celtics made en route to their impressive playoff run.

While the different situations obviously lead to different end results, it’s not like Mathews exploded as a rocket. He’s pretty much the same player as he was with the Wizards last season, minus a tiny bit of efficiency.

Despite seeing this, the Celtics were unwilling to give Mathews the engagement he deserved, and now the Rockets are better for it.

Assuming Garrison Mathews can keep up his current pace and continue working with this Rockets team, that mistake by the Celtics in Houston will pay off for some time.

Next. Colin Cowherd is ridiculously wrong about Rocket’s PG John Wall. dark
