Hong Kong, Bangkok, Tokyo, Singapore

According to a new ranking published by the 50 Best organization, Hong Kong is the most popular destination for gourmets in Asia this year.

The city is home to 16 of the 100 “best” restaurants in the region, as listed in two parts in March.

Thailand and Japan came in second, each with 13 restaurants on the list. The small city-state of Singapore has outperformed with 12 facilities, which are among the best in Asia.

William Drew, director of content at William Reed Business Media, which organizes the awards, told CNBC that Hong Kong had had an “extraordinary experience” this year as it was largely closed to foreign visitors.

“However, apart from the restrictions, many restaurants are very busy locally,” Drew said.

“It is likely that local voters ate at a wider range of restaurants in the city, spreading the vote to a wider range of establishments,” he added.

The 50 Best Restaurants in Asia

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the list of the “50 best Asian restaurants”. This year’s ranking includes restaurants from 10 cities and 16 new entrants.

Looking at only the top 50 cities, Japan is at its peak for the second year in a row. It has occupied the coveted highest ranking – with the Tokyo Den labeled “Best Restaurant in Asia 2022” – and is home to 1 in 5 of every restaurant on the list.

The Hong Kong president, who placed 1st last year, lost four places to 5th. Singapore’s Odette, which has twice been named the best restaurant in Asia, has also lost ground and moved six places from 2nd to 8th place.

Thai Sorn, who finished nine places in second place, also secured the title of “Best Restaurant in Thailand” for the first time. Local chef Thitid ‘Ton’ Tassanakajohn can now count two of his top 10 restaurants – Le Du (No. 4) and Nusara (No. 10).

Day – “the best restaurant” in Asia

Japan Day – number 3 on last year’s list – is a restaurant with two Michelin stars, which was added to the list in 2016. In seven years, it has moved from 37th place to number 1.

Opened in 2007, chef and owner Zaiyu Hasegawa and his team took a creative approach to kaiseki – a traditional multi-course Japanese dish characterized by small, complex meals – with a turn to traditional meals.

Take “Dentucky fried chicken”, for example. It is served in a box that resembles a KFC cover, but instead of Colonel Sanders, it shows Hasegawa holding two drumsticks. The chicken is stuffed with rice.

Denu’s success is no stranger, as it has been named “Best Restaurant in Japan” for five consecutive years. In 2021, it ranked 11th in the list of “50 best restaurants in the world”.

Singaporean restaurants are a hit

About half of Singapore’s restaurants on both lists saw a drop in ratings this year.

Meta – short for metamorphosis – was the only Singaporean restaurant to rise in the rankings, climbing an impressive 40 seats to 20th place. The restaurant with one Michelin star won the “One to Watch” award last year.

Chef Sun Kim recommends trying out his Korean barbecue. “It’s food that I keep close because it gives me a feeling of nostalgia,” he told CNBC.

On the other hand, Kirk Westaway’s Jaan saw a drop in ratings for the third year in a row, from 21st to 42nd and finally to 55th place this year. The euphoria also fell by 15 places to 56th place.

The Australian barbecue restaurant Burnt Ends dropped by 27 places from 14th to 41st place.

Lolla is the highest rated novelty in Singapore at 75th place this year.

A representative of a Mediterranean restaurant told CNBC that the person behind its success is chef Johanne Siy, who joined less than two years ago. Siy was named “Cook of the Year” at last year’s World Gourmet Awards.

How to compile a list

This is how voting works, by organization 50 Best.

The restaurants are selected by more than 300 leaders in the industry, called the “academy”. They are food writers, critics, chefs and restorers from all over the region. The academy changes regularly and has a gender ratio of 50-50, and each voter must visit the restaurant they vote for at least once in the last 18 months.

In 2022, the voting rules were amended to limit international travel. Each member nominates eight restaurants, including up to six from their home country, but without the obligation to vote for restaurants outside their home country.

After two years of live broadcasts, this year’s awards ceremony took place live in three cities: Bangkok, Macao and Tokyo. The events were also streamed on Facebook and YouTube.

50 Best publishes several lists to highlight excellence in the food industry, including “50 best bars in the world” and regional lists such as “The 50 Best Restaurants in Latin America.”
