Gregg Popovich said to Steve Kerr, NBA Finals vs Celtics

The 2022 NBA Finals is upon us. The Golden State Warriors lead the series 3-2 against the Boston Celtics. And they have a chance to end the postseason tournament with a Game 6 win.

With the big game just days away, Steve Kerr joined 95.7 The Game for his weekly gig. He joined the network’s “Damon & Ratto” on Tuesday and spoke about the love triangle between the Warriors, Gregg Popovich and the Celtics.

He said Pop texted both teams to clarify his impartiality before the start of the series.

“Pop texted us all before the start of the series and said, ‘I’m neutral now. I’ll be cheering for everyone.’” Kerr said, all quotes courtesy of 95.7 The Game. “I know he will be happy about the winner and despair about the loser. It’s definitely real pop.”

Kerr played for Pop’s team San Antonio Spurs from 1998 to 2003, winning two titles in the five years.

Popovich and Kerr undeniably have close ties. However, the Warriors coach is aware of the significant relationships Pop has with his Finals rivals.

“(Udoka) wasn’t on the front bench, but he was part of the staff and part of Tokyo. So was Will Hardy, his #1 assistant here in Boston. Another pop guy,” he said. Celtics head coach Ime Udoka worked under Popovich from 2012 to 2019. Will Hardy spent ten seasons with pop, eventually becoming Udoka’s assistant coach in Boston.
