Democrats are also funding election deniers in 2022

Effingham is the director of strategic partnerships for represent us.

An alarming trend is emerging during the 2022 election season. Dozens of candidates who are spreading the lie that the 2020 election was stolen are running for office in the Republican primary. And not only are many of these candidates winning, the Democrats — the party on the front lines of the fight against the Big Lie — are shockingly helping some of these abstainers to victory.

In fact, as of mid-June, more than 100 candidates who dispute that President Biden won the 2020 election have won their primary. On that list, eight are running for the US Senate, 86 for the US House of Representatives, five for governor, four for attorney general and one for secretary of state.

This trend is also a major topic at state level. In the four battleground states of Georgia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Texas, 157 lawmakers who have tried to block the 2020 results have advanced to the general election in November this year. With many more primaries this year, those numbers are sure to increase.

Big Lie contestants receive financial support from unexpected sources

Here at RepresentUs, we have previously documented that American corporations continue to fund politicians who voted to overturn the January 6, 2021 election results. And even though these election liars only run in the Republican primary, they’re getting funding from an unexpected source: the Democratic Party.

As NBC News reports, Democratic groups are running political ads to help the most extreme GOP candidates win primaries across the country. This isn’t a new strategy. These groups believe that if they help put such fringe candidates on the general election ballot, their party will find it easier to win.

This strategy poses serious risks for democracy. For example, in the race for governor of Pennsylvania, Democratic candidate Josh Shapiro Advertisements placed this was aimed at improving Republican Doug Mastriano’s chances in the primary. One of the ads even went so far as to claim, “If Mastriano wins, it will be a victory for what Donald Trump stands for.” Mastriano, currently the state senator, is a COO who took part in the January 6 riots and from Mastriano won the Republican primary, and if he wins this November he will become governor of a major campaign field.

This tactic has increased the odds that an anti-democracy extremist wields tremendous power. Ultimately, these commercials are a risky gamble that directly contradicts the Democratic Party’s stated goal of protecting American democracy.

Democratic groups have also run similar ads for the most extreme candidates in the Colorado Senate race and California’s 22nd Circuit race.

Promote democracy, don’t trick voters

Backing a weaker candidate in the primary to improve your chances in the general election may seem like a smart strategy. But as we’ve seen in the past, these campaigns play with fire. As is well known, Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign staff secretly hoped to run against Donald Trump. Obviously their assumptions about this race were wrong.

Empowering radical anti-democrats may not only be ineffective, but utterly irresponsible. Through this cynical strategy, these campaigns are actually bringing the extremists closer to power – something that should worry American voters on both left and right. With the Jan. 6 hearings showing just how vulnerable our democracy is, Democrats risk handing power to dangerous anti-democratic extremists in a bid to win over a “weaker” opponent in the short term.

At a time when the American people already distrust the two-party system and politics in general, these kinds of partisan shenanigans only make it worse.

Pro-democracy Americans should instead focus on building grand, bipartisan coalitions to defeat these extremist candidates at the ballot box. The majority of Americans view January 6th as an attack on American democracy, proving that underhand campaign tactics are unnecessary to win elections.

One way to stop this strategy of holding off extreme candidates in hopes of an easier general election is to change our primary election system. Bipartisan open primaries, where every candidate is on the ballot and every registered voter can vote, is one answer. And it’s already being used in places like Alaska.

RepresentUs will continue to work with partners and allies across the political spectrum to enact bipartisan primaries, ladder voting, and other pro-democracy reforms that will help end partisanship and give everyday voters a voice.
