Dallas decide on former lottery pick after losing Jalen Brunson

The Dallas Mavericks lost a significant portion of their roster when Jalen Brunson decided to sign with the New York Knicks through free agency. The Mavs lost a big chunk in their Luka Doncic-led backcourt and they need to somehow replace Brunson’s production for the upcoming season.

In that regard, the Mavs have reportedly made a decision on the future of 6-foot-4 point guard Frank Ntilikina. The 23-year-old was the eighth overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft (courtesy the Knicks), and while he didn’t exactly live up to the high expectations most people have of lottery picks, the fact remains that Dallas continues sees some value in this young man.

According to NBA insiders Mark Steinthe Mavs decided to keep Ntilikina for the 2022-23 season:

Frank Ntilikina’s $2 million contract for next season is guaranteed tomorrow, and the Mavericks’ intent, league sources say, is indeed to keep the former Knicks lottery pick.

As the above report states, Ntilikina is now entering the final season of his current contract. Fully guaranteeing his contract for the upcoming season only means the French national can collect the full $2.0m he is owed for 2022-23. Barring any unforeseen developments, Ntilikina is now expected to be a part of the Mavs squad for the upcoming season.

Ntilikina played 58 games for Dallas last season, averaging 4.1 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 11.8 minutes off the bench. He’s clearly not a star but Brunson’s departure could give him a few more minutes in 2022-23.
