Colorado Avalanche make first move of offseason, re-sign key veteran

The Colorado Avalanche won the Stanley Cup just nine days ago, but the off-season moves have already begun.

The team announced Tuesday that it has re-signed veteran Andrew Cogliano on a one-year contract, which will see him return to the Avs for the 2022-23 season. Cogliano was a free agent.

“Andrew has been such a big part of our Stanley Cup championship with his leadership and presence as a veteran,” Avs GM Joe Sakic said in a team press release. “He fought back from various injuries during the playoffs and played key minutes for us when we needed it most. He’s a great teammate who works hard on and off the ice and sets a great example for the rest of the group. We are delighted to have him back for another season.”

The Avalanche was traded from the San Jose Sharks to Cogliano at the NHL trade deadline. He hasn’t scored in 18 regular season games and has only one assist. But Cogliano was big in the playoffs, scoring three goals and adding three assists. He also underwent surgery for a broken hand/wrist in the postseason but ended up missing just one game.

Sakic faces a number of difficult decisions this offseason with the likes of Nazem Kadri, Valeri Nichushkin, Andre Burakovsky and Darcy Kuemper also becoming free agents. He ticked a box Tuesday, and there is still work to be done to ensure Colorado can defend its title.
