The Summer Celtics have three players from Boston’s roster on their way to this year’s NBA Finals in Sam Hauser, who recently signed three-year deals with the Green-Whites, Brodric Thomas and Matt Ryan.
Joining those three is Juhann Begarin, a 1.80m forward who was selected in the second round in 2021. He scored 11.1 points and 4.2 rebounds for Paris Basketball, which was promoted to Pro A, the top flight in France, that season.
The Summer League is also the first chance Celtics fans will have to see Boston’s only pick in this year’s draft, JD Davison, qualify for the C’s.
Davison is an explosive athlete best known for his playmaking and consistent getting in the paint. He needs to cut turnovers after averaging three a game in Alabama. And he has significant progress to make as a shooter, having converted just 30.1 percent of the 2.5 threes he attempted in his only collegiate season. But Davison played as a true freshman in the SEC, averaging 8.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.3 assists and a steal per game. His advantage is worth taking a chance on a late-draft pick.
Rounding out the list are former first-round pick Mfiondu Kabengele, Jordan Bone, a guard with two years of NBA experience, Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year, Trevion Williams, West Roxbury, MA, native and former Providence monk, AJ Reeves , a six-foot-tall guard, Jericole Hellems, a forward from North Carolina State, and Bryton Hobbs, a guard from Northeast State.
Ben Sullivan is the head coach of this year’s Summer Celtics roster. Sullivan could become Ime Udoka’s top lieutenant, filling the void left by Will Hardy getting the job as head coach of the Utah Jazz. At 34, Hardy is the youngest active NBA head coach.
The Celtics begin their Summer League game against the Heat on July 9th. After that, they face off against the Bucks, Warriors, and Grizzlies.
