It’s NBA Draft Night, and that usually gets Boston Celtics fans excited. Celtics fans were treated to an unexpected level of excitement this year as their team made an impressive turnaround that ended with an NBA Finals appearance.
If there’s ever a draft the Celtics should be quiet about, this is it. Rumors always circulate on draft night, and any Bostonians involving trade veteran guard Marcus Smart should be put to rest immediately.
The Boston Celtics shouldn’t be trying to trade Marcus Smart
As NBA fans, we love the off-season. It’s the time when rumors do the rounds and potential roster changes add extra excitement. This is an off-season when Celtics fans need no excitement.
Fresh from their first NBA Finals appearance since 2010, the young Celtics have a lot to offer. This could be the year Boston retires. Basketball Division President Brad Stevens may not even have a choice.
The Celtics don’t have a first-round pick. They sent it to the San Antonio Spurs in a trade deadline deal for Derrick White. The Celtics hold the number 53 in the draft.
While the Celtics may not have much action tonight, there is always trade talk on draft night. Part of that conversation revolved around Smart. Dealing smart wouldn’t be the smartest move by the Celtics. When the Celtics are absolutely overwhelmed by a deal, of course they listen. Stevens shouldn’t be the one to initiate trade talks with Smart.
Smart is the heart and soul of the team
The knock on Smart is his shooting. He’s not the best shot, but that’s not why the Celtics have him in their starting lineup. Smart is the heart and soul of the team. What got the Celtics into the NBA Finals this year is their defense. Smart is the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year.
Smart is no stranger to rumors. His name always pops up at every trade deadline and every draft night.
“You know, I never lose sleep,” he said of the rumors during a live taping of JJ Redicks The old man and the three Podcast in February. “Some of my teammates do. Every year they look at me like, ‘How do you do that and you’re still here?’ And I say, ‘I told you so: I’ll let my game do the talking.’”
Smart’s game is defense, determination, and toughness. He’s more than capable of insulting you, but you know what you’re getting with him on the defensive and the effort ends every night.
The Celtics have suspended much of their core for next year. They are a young group led by Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. They’re coming off a season where they were two wins away from winning a championship. It’s about time the Celtics ride with what they’ve got or make a smaller deal or two to shore up their bench. Take the night off, Celtics. You deserve it.
