BRIDGEPORT – The Democratic City Council is considering increasing the members’ annual scholarships to $ 9,000 without directly increasing that amount.

City Budget Mayor Joe Ganim, presented to the legislature earlier this month, includes a new proposed package of funds – $ 40,000 for “travel services” – in addition to the standard $ 180,000 for members’ scholarships to cover all their expenses.

“People don’t like to talk about raising scholarships,” said Council President Aidee Nieves. “It was just an easier way we didn’t have to fight to raise our scholarships.”
