Blue Devils could place five in 2022 NBA Draft First Round

Duke Basketball won 32 games and reached the Final Four in one of the most chaotic seasons in history as the Blue Devils battled adversity and the ever-present sideshow of head coach Mike Krzyzewski’s final season. And while most of the roster has moved on ahead of newly appointed head coach Jon Scheyer’s rookie season at the helm of the program, last year’s team still has another day in the sun, coming Thursday at the 2022 NBA Draft.

NEW YORK, NY – The 2022 NBA draft is scheduled for Thursday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, with the Duke men’s basketball program looking to continue its recent draft dominance.

Banchero, Williams and Griffin will be present at the Barclays Center as the NBA’s invitations to the Green Room — a gathering area in front of the NBA draft podium where players, families and agents wait for league commissioner Adam Silver to call each pick.

Should all five be drafted, it would set a single-draft record for the Duke program, which is one of the most prolific college basketball programs in generating NBA draft picks. It would be the fifth time in the past seven years that at least three Blue Devils have heard their names on draft night.

Duke’s single-draft record for selections was four, set in 1986, 1999, 2017, and 2018. The 1999 draft featured Duke as the first collegiate program in NBA history to feature four first-rounders Elton brandwent to Chicago for #1 overall, Trajan Langdon No. 11 to Cleveland,Corey Magette No. 13 to Seattle and Will Avery No. 14 to Minnesota. A Duke record was three out of four lottery selections also achieved in 2019 Zion Williamson went to New Orleans for #1 overall, RJ Barrett No. 3 bis new York and cams reddish No. 10 to Atlanta.

A total of 101 Blue Devils were drafted as Duke is only the fourth collegiate program in NCAA history to produce at least 100 drafts. Since the inception of the draft lottery in 1985, no college program or college head coach has produced more lottery picks (28) than Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski, who retired from coaching after that season. Additionally, the Blue Devils’ 42 first-round picks are their second most picks during that span.

Those facts are made even more impressive when you consider that the rest of the field previously held a four-year lead over the Blue Devils Danny Ferrybecame the school’s first lottery selection in 1989. Coach K’s 42 total first-round picks during his tenure are the most by a collegiate coach in NBA draft history.

Since 1956, Duke has selected three or more players in 11 different NBA drafts. The Blue Devils have also had at least one first-round selection in nine of the past 10 years, including at least one lottery selection in six straight drafts from 2014-19.

The 2022 NBA Draft begins at 8 p.m. ET with coverage on ABC, ESPN and the WatchESPN app.
