Bettor cashes $269K parlay thanks to Avalanche

A player completed the game of his life on Sunday night.

In December, a BetMGM customer took advantage of a $500 free bet and decided to place a three-team combo on the NFL, NBA and NHL champions. Almost seven months later, it all came to fruition as the Colorado Avalanche won the Stanley Cup Sunday night by defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Bettor played the Los Angeles Rams (+1000 to win Super Bowl), Golden State Warriors (+600 to win NBA title) and Avalanche (+600). The odds on this combination were +53800, resulting in a payout of $269,000.

That’s correct. This bettor managed to turn a $500 free bet into a whopping $269,000.

It all started with the Rams’ dramatic run to the Super Bowl in January and February — a run that included three-point wins in the Divisional Round, the Conference Championship and then Super Bowl LVI over the Cincinnati Bengals.

On the NBA side, the Warriors were always among the betting favorites to win the title – but never until the finals against the Boston Celtics. But when the Celtics won Game 1 in San Francisco and later went 2-1 up, the Warriors were on the ropes. However, they responded in a big way. Steph Curry accumulated 43 points in Game 4 in Boston and propelled the Warriors to three straight wins to end the six-game streak.

For the NHL, the Avalanche were the preseason favorites to win the Stanley Cup at BetMGM and that preseason status from the odds makers proved correct. As the playoffs rolled around, Colorado was clearly the best team. The Avs defeated the Nashville Predators in the first round, defeated the St. Louis Blues in six games in Round 2, and then defeated the Edmonton Oilers in a Western Conference high-scoring final.

The only thing standing in Colorado’s way – and a massive payday for this bettor – was the mighty Tampa Bay Lightning. The Lightning were the two-time defending champions of the Stanley Cup and went head-to-head with the Avs.

Colorado took a 2-0 lead but were close to a 2-2 draw in the series. Game 4 in Tampa Bay went into overtime, but the Avalanche were able to secure a 3-2 win, their second OT win of the series. The Lightning won Game 5 in Denver, but the Avalanche eventually ended the streak with a 2-1 decision in Game 6 Sunday night.

With the victory, the Avalanche won the Stanley Cup for the first time since 2001 – and conceded an epic combination.
