Avalanche Grades From Tough Game 5 Loss

Entangled in blue

Jack Johnson : C – Started strong like the whole team then everything exploded. Quiet night from the vet who had a little under 13 minutes and a shot at the net.

Bowen Byram: A – What a series for Byram. He played as well and consistently as anyone on this team. He had two assists and I thought he was one of the few Avs with a good game from start to finish.

Erik Johnson: C+ – Some changes were great and on other changes he couldn’t get the puck out of the zone cleanly.

Devon Toews : C+ – A wrister from the point finds its way and Landeskog heads it in. There were a couple of plays in the last few minutes where he just blindly threw the puck away. Uncharacteristic of him.

Cale Makar: C- Again, the last few minutes were a struggle for everyone. The team issued a 3-0 lead and then a 4-3 lead. It was Makar’s man who scored the winning goal with 56 seconds remaining.

Andrew Cogliano : C+ – He continues to sacrifice his body to large animals. It looks painful and I’m in the 300 section.

Valeri Nichushkin πŸ˜€ – He fought out there tonight. Not much offensively and tonight minus three.

Nicolas Aube-Kubel : C – He was chasing his own rebounds and running really hard, but in a game like this you have to dig deeper.

Alex Newhook : C – Love his speed and engagement but no shots on the net and the Avs travel to St.Louis for Game 6. He could be back on the pine in the next game with Andre Burakovsky back.

Logan O’Connor: C- – Finished the game with 9:53 TOI and a minus two. Just not good.

Nathan MacKinnon : X – It felt like he was the only one wanting to go to the Western Conference Finals. Incredible third goal to make it 4:3, but the team couldn’t hold together. Incredible individual achievement.

JT Compher πŸ˜€ – Nothing out there. I hardly noticed him. Almost 12 minutes played and one shot.

Josh Manson : C – He’s been involved in a few chirping battles but never made it over the line. Just a breakdown as a whole team tonight.

Darren Helm : C+ – Tell me if you’ve heard this before…tied to leading the team on hits.

Artturi Lehkonen: B – Played well, committed at both ends. Until the third period, that is, when he was more a passenger.

Nazem Kadri: C- – Unintentionally heated up the crowd all night. Honestly one of the more memorable moments here at Ball Arena. Fans covered the glass with “Stand With Naz” signs and once chanted his name. But he was minus three tonight and really couldn’t transition well.

Gabe Landeskog: C – At moments like this in the dressing room I wish I was a fly on the wall. What was said between the third hour and overtime? He played well tonight but as captain of this side you can’t let them fall apart like that. He made a poor decision with the puck at the end with the keeper drawn, which helped equalize at the end of the rule.

Mikko Rantanen: C+ – He just can’t buy a goal at the moment. It’s not all doom and gloom as he still has 10 assists. The Avs need their point collector from the regular season to get going. Copy paste for the entire playoffs.

Darcy Kuemper πŸ˜€ – Couldn’t make the big savings when needed. Three goals in the third is unacceptable. The team didn’t help them, but man, when you take the lead with 56 seconds to go, you gotta save. The overtime target looked soft from my perspective and probably one he would like to have back.
