American Express – The American Express Travel Report: 2022 shows that people are ready and eager to travel and book trips with more goals than ever before

American Express (NYSE: AXP) has released American Express Travel: Report on Global Travel Trends 20221 today, which shows that people are looking forward to more trips than last year and plan to spend on travel more or the same amount in 2022 compared to a typical pre-pandemic year. The report, based on data from the United States, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Japan, India and the United Kingdom, reveals that consumers travel to see people and places they love, celebrate important life events, go on wish list trips, experience personal events and strive for greater well-being and self-care. In the fourth quarter of 2021, American Express Travel’s global card bookings increased by 24% compared to 2019 and continued to strengthen in 2022.

“The pandemic has forced us all, including travelers, to consider what is really important,” said Audrey Hendley, president of American Express Travel. “A report on global travel trends shows that tourists are catching up and thinking about who they travel with, what places they visit, the brands they support and how they spend their money as tourism progresses.”

Best Findings from the American Express Travel Report: 2022 Global Travel Trends Report1 include:


  • The world is ready to travel:
    74% of respondents agree that they are willing to book a trip for 2022, although they may have to cancel or modify it later1. Compared to last year, this is an increase of 56%.2.

  • Travel expenses exceed pre-pandemic levels

    : 86% of consumers expect more or less to travel in 2022 compared to the typical year before the pandemic1.

  • Tourists want to travel more often:
    62% of respondents plan to make 2-4 trips in 2022 and 76% of respondents agree that in 2022 they plan to travel with their families more than in 2021.

  • Tourists are looking for brands that prefer the support of local communities:
    81% of respondents want to visit destinations where they can immerse themselves in the local culture and want the money they spend while traveling to return to the local community.

  • Dream destinations are becoming a reality:
    55% of respondents want to book a once-in-a-lifetime holiday this year; this is especially true for Millennials (67%) and Gen Z (65%).

  • With the return of fun, trips associated with personal events also return:
    56% of respondents said they postponed traveling to major entertainment events last year, but plan to return to this type of event this year.

1Survey methodology: This online Amex Trendex survey was conducted by Morning Consult between February 3 and 11, 2022 among a national sample of 2,000 U.S. and 1,000 travelers in Australia, Canada, India, Japan, Mexico, the United Kingdom and the U.S. who have a household income of at least 70,000 $ a defined as adults who usually travel by plane at least once a year. The results of each market survey have a deviation of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
