9 PA Republicans Are Endorsing Democrat Josh Shapiro for Governor over Doug Mastriano – NBC10 Philadelphia

A group of Pennsylvania Republicans are breaking ranks with their political party to support the Democratic nominee in the state’s gubernatorial race this year.

The list of Conservative politicians, led by former US Rep. Charlie Dent, is backing Democrat Josh Shapiro in place of her own party’s candidate Doug Mastriano.

Shapiro is the current Attorney General and is widely known as a moderate Democrat. Born and raised in the Philadelphia suburbs, he is a former state representative and commissioner for Montgomery County. Shapiro still lives in his hometown of Abington, northwest of Philadelphia, with his wife and children.

Mastriano, a senator from rural central Pennsylvania, is a retired Army Colonel who was in Washington DC during the January 6, 2021 Capitol riots.

He is one of the most staunch conservatives in the Pennsylvania legislature, but struggled hard from city to city to garner support in rural communities across the state and win the Republican primary for governor in May.

Shapiro (left) and Mastriano (right) face off in the November 2022 general election for Pennsylvania governor.

He even overcame a late challenge from most of the established Pennsylvania Republicans to keep him from winning the nomination.

A poll released last month showed that Shapiro has a small lead over Mastriano among Pennsylvania’s likely voters a few months before the November general election.

Here is the list of nine Republicans who have said they will support Shapiro this week:
