3 ideal Bennedict Mathurin landing spots in the 2022 NBA Draft

Bennedict Mathurin was a force to be reckoned with in his two seasons with the Arizona Wildcats. The 6ft 7 wing was successful as a large shooter, also showing excellent sportsmanship when hitting the rim.

Mathurin is an efficient outside shooter who flashed leading goalscorer ability. It’s about him becoming more of a top scorer and getting points from dribbling at the next level.

Here are three ideal landing spots for Mathurin in terms of team selection.

3. Bennedict Mathurin to the New York Knicks

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

The Knicks have plenty of players on rookie contracts and a bewildering offseason on the horizon. Still, Mathurin would be a prudent choice for New York.

If Mathurin eventually passes Evan Fournier in the Knicks’ starting lineup, he can make a difference on their offense. Over time, Mathurin and RJ Barrett would make a convincing winger duo, as the former is adept at sinking perimeter jumpshots and the latter earns many points from racket attacks. Meanwhile, both players can fly over the edge.

Barrett, Mathurin and Immanuel Quickley would give the Knicks a successful outside attack regardless of how they fill in their starting spot. Mathurin’s selection also gives the Knicks more depth in speed positions.

All in all, the Knicks would have to shed several wings (e.g. Alec Burks and Cam Reddish) to settle a definitive role for Mathurin, potentially leading to a daunting rookie season.

2. Bennedict Mathurin to the Detroit Pistons

Plunging from No. 3 to No. 5 in the NBA Draft Lottery after back-to-back anemic regular seasons isn’t exactly ideal for a recovery team like the Pistons. At the same time, they can still get an Impact player at five. Mathurin would be an exciting pickup for head coach Dwane Casey’s rotation.

Detroit has some players to get excited about in Cade Cunningham, Saddiq Bey and Isaiah Stewart. In the meantime, they need another player to bring positivity to their organization, which Mathurin would do. As shooting guard in the team’s starting XI, Mathurin gives the Pistons another player who can score in a variety of ways.

Additionally, Mathurin would make a promising backfield with Cunningham, as the two players can hold outside jump shots and occasionally ambush defenders on the edge. With Mathurin by his side, the Pistons can focus on signing an inside threat or another front-court leading scorer this offseason with over $20 million in cap space.

The factor that might keep the Pistons from picking Mathurin, however, is that they prefer to add a scorer who primarily attacks the basket as opposed to someone who’s likely to be a high-volume shooter from the jump (Cunningham stands much on perimeter shots).

The Kings have an enigmatic roster formation, but the No. 4 may allow them to justify their daring midseason trade for Domantas Sabonis, which notably sent Tyrese Haliburton and Buddy Hield to the Indiana Pacers. Mathurin is a sensible pick for the Kings.

De’Aaron Fox is an offensive goalscorer. Davion Mitchell is a reliable two-way player who gets points from dribbling. Sabonis is a superb inside goalscorer with a respectable midfield game. Richaun Holmes gets a lot of points in paint. Mathurin gives the kings a much-needed perimeter threat.

Stretching the word for Fox and Sabonis, Mathurin helps make the Kings a supplemental operation whether he starts or comes off the bench. In addition, Mathurin gives the Kings another scoring opportunity and gives them three players who can create offense themselves.

Fit is everything in the NBA. Mathurin may be considered the fourth-best prospect in the 2022 NBA draft class, but Mathurin’s suitability for the Kings makes him a worthwhile pick at four years old. His speed bolsters a strength while filling a gap.
