2022 Stanley Cup Final: Avalanche vs. Lightning odds, NHL picks, Game 2 prediction from proven hockey model

It’s likely that there will be another back-and-forth Saturday night when the Colorado Avalanche host the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 2 of the 2022 Stanley Cup Finals. The Avalanche prevailed Wednesday in Game 1 with a 4-3 overtime win after Tampa Bay stormed back from a two-goal deficit. Andre Burakovsky scored the winner after just 1:23 of overtime and gave the Avs the lead in the series. The Lightning are seeking a third straight NHL championship as Colorado seeks to win their third all-time. The Avalanche have prevailed both times they reached the Finals, in 1995-96 against Florida and in 2000-01 against New Jersey. The Lightning have won three of their four appearances, defeating Calgary in the 2003-04 Finals and losing to the Blackhawks in 2014-15. Colorado is the top seed in the Western Conference while Tampa Bay is No. 3 in the East.

The opening faceoff at Ball Arena in Denver is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET. Colorado is the -160 favorite (risk $160 to win $100) on the moneyline in the latest Avalanche vs. Lightning odds from Caesars Sportsbook. Why the Avalanche can win

Colorado buzzed and quickly got the crowd smoldering on Wednesday night by scoring three goals in the first half. Colorado flew through the neutral zone and had fresh legs from being fired after beating Edmonton in the Western Conference Finals. MacKinnon and defender Cale Makar are the big names, but wingers Gabriel Landeskog, Artturi Lehkonen and Mikko Rantanen all add punch to the attack. Rantanen led the team with 92 regular-season points while MacKinnon had 88 points despite missing 15 games.

MacKinnon has 11 goals in the playoffs, while Landeskog scored his ninth Wednesday and Lehkonen his seventh. Makar has a team-high 22 points (17 assists) in the postseason. Colorado has scored 22 goals in the Oilers series win and has 69 in its 15 playoff contests (4.6 per game). The Avalanche held a 38-23 shot advantage in Game 1 and had 17 takeaways while the Lightning only had four. Goalkeepers Darcy Kuemper and Pavel Francouz have a save rate of 90 and 2.87 goals against average. Colorado is 38-6-5 at home this season.

Why the Flash can win

Tampa Bay has superstars on offense and defense, and goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy is a big reason it’s come this far. He has a playoff average of 2.36 goals against and a 92.6 save percentage. After a postseason loss, he is 17-1 in games, the only blemish being the setback in Game 2 against the Rangers in the Eastern Conference Finals. Perennial Norris Trophy finalist and 2018 winner Victor Hedman is hard to beat for his size and awareness. He got his 13th assist of the playoffs in Game 1 and has 56 shots and 33 blocked shots this postseason.

Sergachev scored the decisive goal in the third period on Wednesday and has 29 shots blocked and 38 goals in the playoffs. The Lightning have plenty of firepower up front, with Ondrej Palat growing strong and Brayden Point recovering after missing the last two series. They support sniper Steven Stamkos and playmaker Nikita Kucherov in a dangerous attack. Stamkos and Palat share the team lead with nine postseason goals, while Kucherov leads the team with 24 points and 17 assists. Point has five points in eight starts.
