2022 Boston Celtics Summer League: Roster, schedule, TV channel, live stream, players to watch

At the start of last season, the Boston Celtics appeared in three of the previous five Eastern Conference playoffs. However, they had lost every time at this stage and had not made it to the finals since 2010. They finally broke through last season, defeating the Brooklyn Nets, Milwaukee Bucks and Miami Heat along the way.

After beating the Golden State Warriors 2-1 in the finals, it looked like they could win a record-breaking 18th championship. Instead, their inability to keep track of the ball caught up with them and they lost the next three games to suffer a heartbreaking loss.

As impressive as the Celtics were at times last season, it was clear as the Finals progressed that they needed to improve their depth. Brad Stevens saw things the same way and solved this problem by signing Danilo Gallinari and trading for Malcolm Brogdon shortly after starting free agency.

The Celtics are expected to be one of the deepest teams in the league and their rotation is largely fixed. They also didn’t have a first-round selection this year, meaning it won’t be the most interesting or exciting situation of the Summer League. Still, there are some players to keep an eye on for both the present and the future. Here’s everything you need to know:

  • Sam Hauser: Amid the many moves the Celtics have made this summer, the signing of Hauser to a three-year deal likely went unnoticed by most casual observers. However, he will be the best and most important player at the Summer Celtics. As an elite shooter who made 43.3 percent of his nine attempts per game in the G League, the team have high hopes that he can develop into a rotation player this season. Giving him a guaranteed long-term deal (even with a low annual salary) was a sign of their trust.
  • Juhan Begarin: Begarin, who was drafted into the second round late last year, was a draft-and-stash player who spent last season in his native France. Still only 19, he’s likely to end up abroad again, especially given the Celtics’ newfound depth. Still, he’s a player to watch this summer, if only to check his progress. He’s an exceptional athlete and as his game develops he could one day bring extra depth on the wing to the Celtics.
  • JD Davison: The Celtics traded their first-round picks to the San Antonio Spurs in the Derrick White trade that year, remaining in the draft with a single second-round pick. They used it to get Davison out of Alabama. The 19-year-old is quite raw, but is another great athlete who repeatedly stressed in a recent interview that he wants to be “a dog” on the pitch. It will be a long term project but it will be fun to see what he can do on his debut.
  • Trevion Williams/Mfiondu Kabengele: We’re going to bring these two together because they’re both big men who will fight for a chance to secure one of the last Celtics spots on the roster. After Daniel Theis was traded to the Indiana Pacers in a trade for Malcolm Brogdon, the Celtics need a little more frontcourt depth and the only real big on the roster behind Robert Williams III and Al Horford is Luke Kornet. The most likely outcome is that they sign a veteran at some point, but both Williams and Kabengele have a real chance here.
